Maia Chiburdanidze (1961- ) is a Georgian chess grandmaster and a pioneer in women’s chess. She is the eleventh women’s world champion and the first stepnguides woman to earn the title of Grandmaster. Chiburdanidze began her chess career at age nine and by age fourteen she was already playing in international tournaments. She achieved great success in the 1970s and 1980s and was one of the top female players in the world. In 1978, she became the youngest women’s world champion ever, at the age of sixteen.
